The Heritage Murals Of Vernon

As you walk down the streets of Vernon visiting guests and residents are visually presented and encouraged to explore the rich heritage of the city. Downtown Vernon is proud to showcase one of the largest collections of outdoor public art in Canada: The Heritage Murals of Vernon.

With twenty-seven amazing murals, some as large as 85m long and 15m high, each depicts a part of the history, culture, scenery and folklore that make Vernon the city it is today.

As you drive up to a stop sign or round the corner from shopping at your favourite Vernon store, you can discover the adventure of the railway, the bravery of our soldiers, and the struggle of the early pioneers around the city unlocking the past through this amazing art.

The mural project was a multi-year collaborative effort which included both a youth employment and revitalization strategy. Initial core funding came from Human Resources Development Canada as part of a job creation program.

Over 54 youth were hired and gained valuable life skills and real work experience. Many of these youth have gone on to rewarding careers.

Two of the youth, Steven Skolka and Tyler Toews have created their own company called Canadian Murals. They were the artists who painted Vernon’s only winter mural celebrating the history and success of the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club.

The mural project created pride in our heritage and was a catalyst for the revitalization of the character of Vernon’s downtown business center. The City of Vernon and downtown merchants each contributed approximately 1 million dollars respectively to restore the streets and landscape of the downtown core.

The Vernon Mural Project was made possible thanks to The Government of Canada and the City of Vernon along with the support of the community and the businesses of Downtown Vernon. A Special Acknowledgment goes to: Michelle Loughery, lead artist on most of the murals.

To explore Vernon’s rich history through a tour, guided walking tours led by a “Conductor” of the Downtown Vernon Association are available, or use of mp3 players and you can stroll the city at your leisure.
